Community Development in Canada

Community development happens from within a community, it does not happentoa community.  It is a process and a tool to facilitate meaningful and sustainable change in quality of life through grassroots involvement and participatory planning.    This new Canadian text is written to provide an introduction to the theories, concepts, and contemporary methods of community development work, and an opportunity to develop specific skills such as relationship-building and maintenance.   Chapters 8 to 11 contain selected case studies from each province and territory and also discuss development in Aboriginal and international communities. Examples include:   The Alberta Cerebral Palsy Sports Association, Edmonton, Alberta  Seniors Bridging Cultures Club, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador  Community Access Program, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island  The Sustainable Toronto Project, Toronto, Ontario  School of Community Government, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories    Jason Brown of the University of Western Ontario has worked as a social worker and as a psychologist conducting research and providing front-line counselling services to youth in Manitoba.   David Hannis is a community development instructor and field placement co-coordinator at Grant MacEwan College, Alberta.
